Pioneer photographer and silversmith, aged 90, the oldest living professional photographer in Ind., d. at his home on South East St.,buried in Maple Hill Cemetery.  For more than 60 yrs. he conducted a photograph gallery here and when he retired from business some ten years ago bore the distinction of being oldest in Ind.  He began when the daugerreotype was the only form of photography and saw it develop into marvelous craftsmanship of today.  His collection of photographs part his own work and others he collected, is very rare and of great interest.  He was also a watchmaker and silversmith, following these trades in connection with his photography.  Also veteran cyclist, owning 1st bicycle in Plainfield.  Born in Fairfield Dec. 3, 1836, birthright Friend, staunch Republican, attended Friends Bloomingdale Academy as a boy; he is last of a family of 12 children.

Friday Caller (Plainfield), Dec. 8, 1911, article about 75th birthday of Moses Tomlinson, the oldest photographer in the state. With exception of yr. or two has lived in vicinity. He 'picked up" photography in 1859, when the ambertype pictures were being made. Learned silversmith's trade in 1861 and when he wasn't taking pictures he was tinkering with watches and clocks, until the last 2 or 3 yrs. when his health has been such that he has been unable to attend to business. Republican.

Mr. Tomlinson was father of Mrs. Artelia Thomas and Mrs. Generva Holderman and the family resided one block east on the corner of East and Main streets. The building, which now houses the Symons Hardware Store, was built by Moses Tomlinson's brother, Ebenezer, who operated a general store there and became Plainfield's first banker. The stairway was in the center of the building and led to the second and third floors. The bank was in the west room of the building."
